Avinash Sable: CWG 2022, athletics: India's Avinash Sable wins steeplechase silver, denied podium cleanup in Kenya

India’s Avinash Sable bettered his own national record by almost a second to win silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the 2022 Commonwealth Games here on Saturday.

Sable clocked 8:11.20 to better her previous NR of 8:12.48 set at the Rabat Diamond League earlier this year. It was also India’s first steeplechase medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Kenya’s Abraham Kibiwot, the 2018 Gold Coast silver medalist and one of the leading runners this year, won the gold by 0.05 seconds over the Indian. World junior champion Amos Serem from Kenya won the bronze medal with a result of 8:16.83. Kenyan Olympic and two-time world champion Conseslus Kipruto was sixth in 8:34.96.

Sable’s feat was historic given that the mighty Kenyans had not swept the podium in the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the CWG since Victoria 1994. Canada’s Graham Vincent Fell won the bronze medal, defeating the Kenyan athletes with a score of 1-2-3.

27-year-old Sable, who finished 11th at the World Championships in Athletics

after a slow start last month, he burst out of the blocks during his race at the Alexander Stadium and was in the lead pack with three Kenyan runners leading the race in the early stages.

With the rest of the field trailing behind, Sable did well to stay with the Kenyan trio, who were considered pre-tournament favorites to clear the podium.

It was in the last part that the Indian stepped on the gas and moved into the medal positions. The final 150m was a sprint to the finish line as Sable and Kibiwot came out on top. The Indian kept the Kenyan on his toes, but ended up 0.05 seconds short of the gold.
