After changing ad policies, Hulu will now run Democratic ads focused on abortion and gun laws after receiving backlash. Axios reports.
Hulu now accepts political ads, according to parent company Disney. The company explained in a statement:
After thoroughly reviewing advertising policies across its linear networks and streaming platforms over the past several months, Disney is now aligning Hulu’s advertising policies to align with the company’s broader sports and entertainment cable networks and ESPN+.
The statement continued:
Hulu is now accepting nominations and airing ads covering a wide range of political positions, but reserves the right to request changes or alternative creative in accordance with industry standards.
As previously reported, the Democrats sent out ads on July 15 and ran on social media, but not on Hulu. When asked about the ads, Hulu said they are “content-based.”
Hulu later said they would run the ad, but “sent the wrong message, according to a Democratic National Party official.” Tepe reports.
The controversial ad came in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade and the repeal of New York State’s law restricting the carrying of firearms in public.
“Censorship of the truth is cruel and offensive,” the Democratic Party’s campaign committee tweeted Monday. “Voters have a right to know the facts about Republican MAGA’s extreme pro-abortion program – Hulu is doing the American people a great disservice.”
