Rockies lost 13-0 in first home loss to Dodgers-Greeley Tribune

As the Rockies lost 13-0 at Coors Field, a growing chant of “Let’s Go Dodgers” from the visiting fans rose from the late-game silence.

At least the cool weather was great.

Colorado falls to 45-55 on the season, in last place in the NL West, with three more home games to go against the division-leading Dodgers. Most everything about the Rockies’ loss on Thursday felt self-imposed.

Three players — catcher Elias Diaz, first baseman Connor Joe and starting pitcher Jose Orna — all committed throwing errors. Orna gave up 10 runs (seven) on eight hits in his worst game of the year.

The Rockies’ bats were stopped by former Rockies starter Tyler Anderson. The Dodgers southpaw gave up just four hits over seven scoreless innings. The Rockies threatened in the fifth with a double by Kris Bryant and a single by Brendan Rodgers. But Diaz struck out to end the frame. Colorado went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position on the night.

Colorado Rockies first baseman Connor Joe (9) reaches third with a broken bat pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the third inning at Coors Field on July 28, 2022.

The Rockies trailed 6-0 after just two innings, and a Diaz throwing error to third and a wild pitch from Orna brought in the Los Angeles runs. The Dodgers were led by Trea Turner and Will Smith, who each ripped doubles and scored four runs in the second inning alone.

Orna came out for the third game and left the team in order. However, with no outs in the fourth inning, he gave up back-to-back singles followed by a throwing error to first that loaded the bases. After Smith hit a two-run single to put the Dodgers up 8-0, he was pulled — much to the delight of the blue-heavy Dodgers-centric crowd of 32,182 inside Coors Field.

Austin Gomber came on in relief for the Rockies and scored three more runs for Los Angeles (Gavin Lux RBI single and Cody Bellinger RBI double). Colorado right-hander Justin Lawrence also gave up a two-run home run to Freddie Freeman in the seventh.
