Jesus’ birthday! 30 years ago today, Mary J. Blige released her debut album, What’s The 411? Published. Changed the game! According to Billboard, the twelve-track album debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 and has sold 3.5 million copies to date! Mary won the Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album for Classic Album, cementing her title as the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul.” Now you know the title comes from Sean “Diddy” Combs, Love’s Only Brother.
Diddy and Mary’s friendship began decades ago during their time at Uptown Records, founded by the late R&B music executive Andre Harrell. If you remember, Andre Mary, the first lady, discovered Uptown Records and appointed Diddy as the executive producer of her debut. According to Revolt, Diddy and other producers including Mark Morales, Dave Hall, Mark “Cory” Rooney, Tony Dufat and several others were instrumental in developing Mary’s signature sound.
Mary’s long career isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The singer-actress released her 14th studio album Good Morning Gorgeous (Deluxe) in May and is gearing up for her tour with Queen Naija and Ella Mai. Billboard reports that the Grammy winner recently spoke about the 30th anniversary of “What’s The 411?” Featuring Nadeska from Apple Music 1.
Speaking to Nadeska, he said: “I’m very proud of myself because I worked so hard to get here… I’m proud of my spirit, my spirit, my work ethic and the people I’ve chosen. I’m surrounded by “I’m proud of the energy I give people. I’m very proud of how far I’ve come because I’ve come a long way.”
Congratulations to Maryam for such a culture-changing classic album!
