Classes begin August 16 for the Austin Area School District.
AUSTIN, Texas – Many schools in Central Texas start school in less than a month, and safety is top of mind for school administrators across Texas.
On Thursday, staff at Lake Travis Independent School District Conducted an active shooting exercise. Lake Travis conducted the training with Bay Cave and Lakeway Police at Bay Cave Middle School.
Andy Michael is the Chief of Police for the Lake Travis ISD Police Department. He said the children and staff are very important to him and safety is his priority.
“My kids go to school here, people I know, their kids go to school here. It’s more than a job to me. It’s personal. These are my people,” Michael said.
A quick response is also a high priority in the event of an active shooter, he said.
“Our training is to go to a school immediately, whether it’s one officer, five officers or 100 officers. The first officer on the scene is going to enter the school, that officer will immediately deal with the threat,” Michael said.
They also followed tactical approaches to enter the classroom when needed. At Uvalde, there were reports of doors not working properly. Michael said they are checking all their doors in preparation for the next school year.
“We did a full audit of the entire district this summer. It was more of a formal audit than usual, but we review them every summer and throughout the year. What we’re going to do this year is our officers “We’ve always checked the exterior doors and the interior doors to make sure everything is working throughout the school year. Usually several times a week, depending on the time, but this year we’ll be bringing in campus administrators and campus personnel. Michael said we need to do the same checks.” to do
Michael said they constantly remind students and teachers not to support any door. He said he and the district are making sure everything is in order for the school year that begins Aug. 16.
