Teen Mom OG star Amber Portwood said she was “devastated and heartbroken” after an Indiana judge awarded her ex Andrew Glennon physical and sole custody of their son, James, 4 years. The former couple were embroiled in a three-year custody battle following Portwood’s domestic violence arrest in 2019.
Portwood released an official statement about the judge’s verdict via Instagram.
“I have worked so hard to improve myself and my relationship with my children,” Portwood wrote. “While I have always been open about my addiction and mental health issues, a person should be given the opportunity to heal themselves and not be tied down to their past issues.”
Portwood said she has taken several steps to become a better person since pleading guilty two offenses home battery and bullying.
“People who have gone through therapy and classes and made changes should not continue to be punished for their past mistakes,” she continued. “I spent years rebuilding my bridges and doing everything I was asked to do, including 21 negative drug tests and multiple psychiatric evaluations.”
Portwood is also mother to 13-year-old Leah, whom she shares with ex-boyfriend Gary Shirley.
Portwood vowed to keep fighting
Portwood, 32, didn’t want to give up hope.
“If your path wasn’t perfect, but you worked hard to become a better, more stable, caring person today, keep going,” she said. “I will never stop fighting for my children who I love very much. I have been living in a nightmare for so long, trying to prove myself.
The star added: “I wouldn’t wish this excruciating pain on a mother or father.”
Glennon sent a short message to E ! new. “We survived the nightmare,” he said. “Now we can live the dream.”
Glennon was told to “seek and consider the mother’s opinion before making important decisions regarding the medical treatment, upbringing and religion of the child”, the court ruling by The sun.
The decision allows Glennon to move James from Indiana – Portwood’s home state – to California, where Glennon and his family live. Glennon moved to Indiana from The Golden State when he started dating Portwood in 2017.
They met while Portwood was filming Marriage Boot Camp with her ex-fiancé, Matt Baier. Glennon worked as a crew member.
At that time Shirley said in weekly contact that Portwood should have stayed single longer rather than getting out of another relationship.
“I think she should have stayed single longer and got to know herself better and got over someone before she started dating someone else – because that’s how you do it, man,” a- he told In Touchl. “The right path. You don’t need anyone to feel alive.
The Portwood co-stars have remained silent
The Portwood ‘Teen Mom’ co-stars didn’t immediately comment after the judge ruled against them, but Briana DeJesus shared a cryptic message that appeared to reference the situation.
“Please be nice…you really don’t know what’s in someone’s heart,” DeJesus wrote, according to screenshots shared via Reddit. “The internet is such an unforgiving place. Losing a child is extremely heartbreaking.
DeJesus quickly deleted the post.
MTV combined Teen Mom OG and Teen Mom 2 to create Teen Mom: The Next Chapter. The wives of the two actors shot the series in Florida.
