Lorenzo Mussetti shocked Carlos Alcaraz’s claycourt favorite by winning the Hamburg European Open and claiming his first ATP title.
The 20-year-old Italian beat the 19-year-old Spanish superstar 6-4 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 in Sunday’s final.
Despite the defeat, Alcaraz will enter the top five in the world rankings for the first time.
He is the youngest player to do so since fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in 2005.
Musetti was in his first ATP Final and is being talked about at the same time as Alcaraz as a potential future men’s tennis star.
He put his opponent into a tailgate by taking the first set with confidence and earned the match point in the second set tiebreak, only to give up the clip with a double-fault.
But Mussetti pounced on a respite late in the third set to outsmart a man who has won four championships already this year.
